In 2026, Catalonia will establish itself as a strategic hub on the green hydrogen map of Spain and Europe. This autonomous community is home to a thriving ecosystem centred around this energy source, comprising companies, investments and ongoing initiatives.
As the green hydrogen market develops in Spain and Europe, the infrastructure required for its deployment is attracting greater interest from different sectors that view this energy carrier as an optimal solution for decarbonisation and reducing energy dependence.
The industrial ecosystem of the Region of Valencia is one of the most energy-intensive in Spain. According to the most recent data available on the Statistical Portal of the Generalitat Valenciana its energy consumption in 2023 accounted for 14.2% of the national total. This is due to the presence in the region of sectors such as chemicals, petrochemicals, ceramics and steel.
When it comes to green hydrogen in Spain, Aragon is one of the key locations. In Enagás’s 2023 Call for Interest to identify potential production and consumption centres for this energy vector in Spain, Aragon had the highest number of hydrogen projects at various stages of planning and development.
The Enagás Corporate University (UCE) celebrated its first anniversary in Madrid, having already established itself as a leading provider of energy sector training. In its first year, the UCE delivered over 92,000 hours of training across 1,400 courses for 1,263 professionals, averaging 67.5 hours per employee.
The energy transition in Europe is underway. In Spain, this commitment to renewable energy sources of the future is becoming increasingly decisive.
China accounts for over half of the green hydrogen production capacity currently operational around the world. Moreover, 94 of the 510 projects globally committed until 2030 (in other words, almost one in five) are located in China.
In Spain, green hydrogen has already mobilised over 3 billion euros in aid from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Of this total, 520 million euros have been earmarked for five hydrogen-intensive projects, while a further 1.2 billion euros have been allocated to the development of hydrogen valleys, which are regarded as a key part of energy and territorial planning.

With nearly 400 projects underway and an investment of over €33 billion, Spain is positioning itself as a leader in the development of renewable hydrogen. Four large electrolysers with a total capacity of 235 MW and an investment of over €700 million are set to be operational by 2026. These will be capable of producing 34,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
