Green hydrogen projects in Murcia: roll-out through technology and innovation

Murcia is at a turning point in the development of green hydrogen. The region has a concrete work programme, ongoing projects and committed investments, as well as an industrial plan that positions the green hydrogen sector as part of its sustainable growth strategy.

The energy mix in the Region of Murcia sheds light on current hydrogen trends. According to Red Eléctrica, 41.4 per cent of the energy generated in 2025 came from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power. This confirms its high capacity for competitive renewable electricity generation, which is a key factor in green hydrogen production through electrolysis.

Furthermore, the 2023–2030 Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) sets a national target of 12 GW of electrolysis capacity, positioning regions with abundant solar resources, such as Murcia, as potential production hubs for both local consumption and export to other regions.

The Murcia Region’s Industrial Plan 2026–2035 provides for 1.731 billion euros of public investment, including the development of renewable gases such as hydrogen, biogas, and biomethane.

Main green hydrogen projects in Murcia

The combination of industrial energy demand, the availability of renewable energy sources – primarily solar and wind – and public planning positions Murcia as a region with the capacity to implement hydrogen projects. Below are some of the most significant green hydrogen projects in the region.

Cartagena Large Electrolyser: the flagship project of the Escombreras Valley

The Escombreras Green Hydrogen Plant, located within the Cartagena industrial and port complex, is designed to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year using electrolysis power of 100 MW. Repsol, the company leading the consortium, is responsible for technological development. The main objective is to decarbonise the Cartagena refinery, as well as to supply the port’s new logistics facilities. Enagás Renovable is part of the project with a 25% stake.

Overall investment in the Cartagena Large Electrolyser project exceeds 300 million euros, and it is estimated that around 900 jobs will be created during the project’s various phases, both directly and indirectly.

The facility has been recognised by the European Commission and the Spanish government as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), and it will receive 155 million euros through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). It is expected to be operational by 2029.

Lorca DH2 Energy: a commitment to large-scale electrolysis

DH2 Energy is developing a renewable hydrogen production project in the municipality of Lorca with electrolysis power of 300 MW and a committed investment of 800 million euros. Currently awaiting permits prior to construction, this project would be one of the largest facilities of its kind in Spain.

ECOFOSS: innovation in marine environments

The ECOFOSS project, developed by a consortium led by Navantia alongside Red Eléctrica, Sener, Ocean Ecostructures, Ditrel, and Uptech Sensing, introduces a unique element to the Murcia ecosystem by integrating green hydrogen into marine environments. This initiative involves a floating high-voltage substation combined with a plant for generating and re-electrifying renewable hydrogen, demonstrating the versatility of this energy carrier in contexts beyond onshore industry.

SOFCOMPACT: advancing power conversion technologies

On a smaller scale, but with significant technological innovation, the SOFCOMPACT project, led by Regenera Levante, Idea Ingeniería, and SENER, is working on developing solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to efficiently convert green hydrogen into electricity. Funded by the IDAE, the project is due to be completed in May 2027 and aims to develop systems with a capacity of at least 50 kW for stationary applications. These systems will use advanced materials to reduce the use of critical components and improve long-term durability.

The future Hydrogen Backbone Network in Murcia

During June and July 2026 Enagás implemented the Conceptual Public Participation Plan (PCPP) for the future Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network in the Region of Murcia. This participatory process involves the public, public authorities, businesses and social partners in the early stages of Spain’s hydrogen transport project.

In Murcia, the plans for the hydrogen backbone network include a 44-kilometre section of the 2,600-kilometre network to be rolled out across 13 Spanish autonomous communities. The main objective is to facilitate large-scale transport between production centres and areas of industrial consumption.
