The advance of renewable energies, the development of clean technologies and the search for more sustainable models are generating opportunities to create disruptive solutions. However, despite this transformational momentum, the presence of women in these fields remains a minority one.<\/p>\n<p>The World Economic Forum, in a report drawn up in collaboration with LinkedIn (2025), confirms that\u00a0<strong>female innovation-geared talent<\/strong>\u00a0has been on the rise in recent years. Even so, women only account for 28% of the STEM workforce, 24.4% of managerial positions and barely 12.2% of senior executive positions.<\/p>\n<p>A similar situation besets entrepreneurship. According to the Mastercard Index of <strong>Women Entrepreneurs<\/strong> (2025), interest in creating a company is high:\u00a0<strong>four out of ten Spanish women (39%) have considered setting up a business<\/strong>. However, there is still a gap between intention and action. Although Spain is one of the European countries with the best conditions in terms of education, financing and digitisation, the number of women at the helm of innovative businesses remains low.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>lack of funding<\/strong>\u00a0(32%), a<strong> fear of failure<\/strong>\u00a0(31%) and the\u00a0<strong>scarcity of financial resources<\/strong>\u00a0(27%) continue to constitute the main obstacles, together with a more intangible factor:\u00a0<strong>self-confidence<\/strong>. A third of women admit that their\u00a0<strong>lack of self-confidence<\/strong>\u00a0prevents them from starting the ball rolling, a figure that rises to 45% among millennials.<\/p>\n<p>According to Carmen Garc\u00eda, Start-up and Fund Investment Coordinator at Enag\u00e1s Emprende, \u201craising capital isn\u2019t just a matter of money, it also requires leadership. It\u2019s important for\u00a0<strong>female entrepreneurs<\/strong>\u00a0to be on top of their numbers, define their story properly and choose partners aligned with their purpose. And I\u2019d add a very important factor:\u00a0<strong>the advocating of women\u2019s leadership<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>as a distinctive value<\/strong>, not an exception\u201d. In her opinion, <strong>female entrepreneurs<\/strong>\u00a0bring a more diverse, more collaborative and often more sustainable approach to growth, which is what the innovation ecosystem needs.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Although Spain is one of the European countries with the best conditions in terms of education, financing and digitisation, the number of women at the helm of innovative businesses remains low<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Barriers to feminine talent that cost money<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In Spain, the Afi consultancy firm and Red El\u00e9ctrica estimate that\u00a0<strong>the gender gap in innovative entrepreneurship takes 5.300 billion euros off the national GDP.<\/strong> For every man who undertakes technological and R&amp;D-intensive projects, only 0.36 women do so. This is a loss of talent that impoverishes not only the economy, but also the creativity of a country aspiring to lead the green transition.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s interesting to observe that, when the barriers are removed, the results follow. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/comprometidos\/entrevista-maria-junco\/\">sectors such as energy<\/a>, in which the technical and regulatory complexity requires collaborative leadership, women are introducing new management styles that are more cross-cutting, more purpose-driven and more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/comprometidos\/mujeres-defensoras-medioambiente\/\">sustainability-conscious<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enag\u00e1s<\/strong>, for example, has been promoting an\u00a0<strong>open innovation model<\/strong>\u00a0that combines\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/comprometidos\/el-emprendimiento-puede-aportar-aproximaciones-a-nuevas-tecnologias-de-una-manera-muy-rapida-y-cost-effective\/\">technology<\/a>, entrepreneurship and sustainability for a number of years. Its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emprende.enagas.es\/\">Enag\u00e1s Emprende<\/a> programme, a corporate venturing vehicle focused on the pre-seed and seed phases,\u00a0<strong>invests in start-ups<em>\u00a0<\/em>that develop solutions for the energy transition<\/strong>. These are chiefly geared towards the development of renewable gases such as hydrogen and biomethane.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Women are introducing new management styles that are more cross-cutting, more purpose-driven and more\u00a0sustainability-conscious<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This programme provides an environment in which technological innovation and female leadership can converge, thereby\u00a0<strong>promoting women\u2019s active participation<\/strong>. In the energy field, opening up these doors has a multiplying effect:\u00a0<strong>every project led by a woman generates role models<\/strong>\u00a0and changes the perceptions of the entire industry.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mar\u00eda Ochoa, Enag\u00e1s Emprende\u2019s Start-up Portfolio Manager, \u201cthere\u2019s still a long way to go for\u00a0<strong>female entrepreneurship<\/strong>\u00a0in the energy sector. One of the main barriers facing women is their low representation in STEM profiles, ones that are in high demand in this field, restricting their access to strategic roles and the creation of new companies.\u00a0<strong>At Enag\u00e1s we support innovation led by women<\/strong>, fostering collaboration with start-ups and giving visibility to female projects\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What works: programmes and practices that pave the way<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most effective programmes for promoting the<strong> leadership of women in innovation<\/strong>\u00a0share three common features. Firstly, they make the talent visible, with real references in technical, managerial and foundational positions. Secondly, they connect women to investment and mentoring networks, thus minimising the professional isolation that still persists in the STEM sectors. Thirdly, they evaluate their results, gauging the impact and scalability rather than just focusing on the rhetoric of equality.<\/p>\n<p>Examples such as\u00a0<strong>Enag\u00e1s Emprende<\/strong>\u00a0and the International Energy Agency\u2019s <strong>Women in Energy<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>programme<\/strong>\u00a0demonstrate how public-private partnerships can generate more inclusive environments for innovation. In this regard, the European Commission\u2019s Women TechEU grants support dozens of technological start-ups set up by women each year.<\/p>\n<p>These programmes encourage the\u00a0<strong>participation of women in the technology and energy sectors<\/strong> and put essential values such as cooperation and teamwork into practice.<\/p>\n<p>Ana Adalid, an intrapreneur and member of the\u00a0<strong>Enag\u00e1s Emprende <\/strong>team, declared that \u201cof all the lessons learnt, I\u2019d emphasise the importance of collaboration, as sharing doubts and experiences not only provides support, it sometimes unlocks solutions that you haven\u2019t seen before. And teamwork, as two or more heads think better than one. And, finally, the ability to improvise, because being able to adapt can make all the difference along the way\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to McKinsey &amp; Company, if Europe were to double the presence of women in the technology sector to 45%, between \u20ac260 billion and \u20ac600 billion could be added to the European Union\u2019s GDP by 2027.<\/p>\n<p>There are also signs of\u00a0<strong>confidence among women themselves<\/strong>. The World Economic Forum estimates that one in four female entrepreneurs around the world hope to scale up their business within the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>The figures and programmes reflect real structural progress. The talent is there, but it needs space to fully develop. What was referred to as equal opportunities a decade ago is now being addressed in terms of competitiveness and sustainability.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The energy transition is opening up a landscape of innovation full of opportunities, in which more and more women are showing an interest in entrepreneurship and leading technological projects.
