Against this backdrop,\u00a0<strong>green hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0is emerging as one of the rosiest pieces in the energy puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>The current challenge lies in understanding <strong>what this energy vector means for agriculture<\/strong>\u00a0and how Spain is preparing to stand at the helm of the transition.<\/p>\n<h2>What is green hydrogen and how can it revolutionise agriculture?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/innovadores\/potencial-hidrogeno-verde-descarbonizacion\/\">Green hydrogen<\/a>\u00a0is obtained when electrolysers separate oxygen and hydrogen from water by means of a process known as electrolysis. What makes it \u201cgreen\u201d is the fact that the electricity that powers the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/sostenibles\/electrolizadores\/\">electrolysers<\/a>\u00a0comes from renewable sources such as solar and wind power.<\/p>\n<p>And what does this mean for the countryside? Much more than meets the eye.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can be used to produce\u00a0<strong>green fertilisers<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/sostenibles\/amoniaco-verde\/\">Ammonia<\/a>, the basis for most nitrogen fertilisers, is produced by combining hydrogen with nitrogen. We\u2019ve obtained this hydrogen from natural gas until now. If we do so using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/innovadores\/mitos-hidrogeno-renovable\/\">renewable hydrogen<\/a>, they can become green and more sustainable fertilisers.<\/li>\n<li>Hydrogen can also be used\u00a0<strong>as a fuel<\/strong>in thermal processes (grain drying and greenhouse heating) and to generate back-up electricity during periods characterised by low renewable production.<\/li>\n<li>It also plays a key role in\u00a0<strong>mobility and machinery<\/strong>. In the mid term, tractors, combine harvesters and lorries could run on hydrogen and derived synthetic fuels.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike batteries, hydrogen can\u00a0<strong>store renewable energy<\/strong>for weeks or months, suiting agricultural cycles with high energy consumption focused on certain periods of the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Green hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0is therefore a way of improving efficiency and sustainability and making the countryside more resilient within the context of the energy transition.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Green hydrogen\u00a0is a way of improving efficiency and sustainability and making the countryside more resilient within the context of the energy transition<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The importance of green fertilisers<\/h2>\n<p>The link between\u00a0<strong>hydrogen and agriculture<\/strong>\u00a0involves a key molecule:\u00a0<strong>ammonia<\/strong>. The Haber-Bosch process has synthesised it using hydrogen and nitrogen from the air for a century. The ammonia is then converted into fertilisers to guarantee agricultural productivity. We\u2019ve obtained this hydrogen from natural gas until now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green hydrogen<\/strong>, as it\u2019s generated by means of electrolysis with renewable electricity, allows for the\u00a0<strong>production of ammonia and fertilisers with extremely low emissions.<\/strong> Replacing gas with\u00a0<strong>renewable hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0is therefore one of the fastest levers for the decarbonisation of the countryside.<\/p>\n<p>Spain has recently witnessed how several projects have taken decisive steps towards the deployment of\u00a0<strong>green hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0in the agricultural industry by means of the production of sustainable fertilisers.<\/p>\n<h2>Ongoing projects<\/h2>\n<p>One example in Spain is Puertollano in Ciudad Real. <strong>Iberdrola<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0Fertiberia<\/strong>\u00a0started up the first large\u00a0<strong>green hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0plant linked to fertiliser production there in 2022. The solar-powered electrolyser now produces\u00a0<strong>renewable hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0which is used by Fertiberia in its chemical processes.<\/p>\n<p>This has resulted in the first\u00a0<strong>green fertilisers to be produced in the country<\/strong>, and these have already been used on pilot crops of barley and potatoes. The joint plan is ambitious: to scale up capacity from an initial 20 MW to 200 MW, in such a way that a significant proportion of the fertilisers that reach the Spanish countryside over the coming decade come from\u00a0<strong>renewable hydrogen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Another of the regions where this revolution is taking place is Asturias. The\u00a0<strong>GAIA project<\/strong>\u00a0is seeking to transform the region\u2019s traditional relationship with fertilisers in industry with a cleaner version.<\/p>\n<p>Its purpose is to produce renewable ammonia on a large scale so as to fuel the manufacture of low-carbon fertilisers. The project has received support from the European Innovation Fund, thus confirming its strategic relevance for Brussels. Once it becomes operational, it\u2019s expected to produce\u00a0<strong>180,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year<\/strong>, enough to supply a large part of the domestic agricultural market and significantly reduce any associated emissions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Spain moves steadily towards the forefront of green fertiliser production<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Public support: from the PRTR to European funds<\/h2>\n<p>Public support makes it possible for these projects to move forwards. Spain has channelled hundreds of millions of euros in direct aid towards hydrogen projects through the\u00a0<strong>Recovery Plan<\/strong>\u00a0(PRTR) and the\u00a0<strong>PERTE ERHA programme<\/strong>. These are some of the large assignments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2023, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) decided to grant 200 million euros in aid for 37\u00a0<strong>renewable hydrogen<\/strong>projects within the framework of the PERTE ERHA.<\/li>\n<li>In the same year, the MITECO awarded 100 million euros in aid to large electrolyser projects for the production of\u00a0<strong>renewable hydrogen\u00a0<\/strong>(line 3 of the H2 Value Chain programme) that also forms part of the PERTE ERHA.<\/li>\n<li>Similarly, in 2023, a 66.6-million-euro PRTR call was launched for the innovative\u00a0<strong>renewable hydrogen<\/strong> value chain under the PERTE ERHA.<\/li>\n<li>In June 2025, 1.223 billion euros of Next Generation (PRTR) funds were awarded to seven\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/innovadores\/proyectos-valles-hidrogeno-2025\/\">hydrogen valley<\/a> Many of them include chemical and fertiliser industries as their target customers, in other words, those with a direct impact on agriculture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brussels has bolstered this commitment with new Innovation Fund\u00a0and IPCEI programme lines, enabling some of these projects to secure funding.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the\u00a0<strong>promotion of renewable energies<\/strong>\u00a0and effective collaboration between the public and private sectors, Spain is steadily advancing towards\u00a0<strong>the forefront of green fertiliser production<\/strong>. This commitment will not only reinforce the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, it will also place the country in a strategic position in the transition towards climate-neutral agriculture based on local solutions with a global impact.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Spanish agricultural sector is undergoing a transition towards more sustainable and competitive models.
