{"id":8046,"date":"2025-03-14T13:08:32","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T12:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/uncategorized\/hydrogen-valleys-in-2025-what-is-their-current-state-of-progress\/"},"modified":"2025-03-14T13:08:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T12:08:32","slug":"hydrogen-valleys-in-2025-what-is-their-current-state-of-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/hydrogen-valleys-in-2025-what-is-their-current-state-of-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen valleys in 2025: what is their current state of progress?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<strong>Spanish Government <\/strong>recently announced the investment of more than 1.2 billion euros to promote the development of\u00a0<strong>hydrogen valleys<\/strong>\u00a0in our country.\u00a0 In recent years, these ecosystems have emerged as a key solution for\u00a0<strong>accelerating the energy transition<\/strong>, integrating\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/journey-through-the-hydrogen-value-chain-from-production-to-consumption\/\">production, distribution and consumption<\/a>\u00a0into a single industrial ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Following the government\u2019s investment in these solutions, it is appropriate to review the selected projects, which will help Spain position itself as a\u00a0<strong>European hydrogen powerhouse<\/strong>\u00a0and a benchmark country in the\u00a0<strong>energy transition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Spain and the Hydrogen Valleys Alliance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Just a few weeks ago, sixteen\u00a0<strong>hydrogen valleys<\/strong>\u00a0in Spain came together to form the\u00a0<strong> Hydrogen Valleys Alliance<\/strong>. The main objective of the pact is to promote the renewable hydrogen value chain and\u00a0the <strong>decarbonisation of the industrial and transport sectors<\/strong>, as well as to position\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/how-spain-is-positioning-itself-to-become-europes-leading-hydrogen-hub\/\"><strong>Spain as a leading country<\/strong> in\u00a0hydrogen <\/a>\u00a0within the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>In each of the sixteen\u00a0<strong>hydrogen valleys<\/strong>\u00a0that have joined the Alliance, there are companies and organisations that are part of the\u00a0<strong>hydrogen value chain<\/strong>.\u00a0In total, more than\u00a0<strong>600 entities<\/strong>\u00a0are currently involved in more than\u00a0<strong>300 projects<\/strong>\u00a0related to renewable hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, the\u00a0<strong>Spanish government<\/strong>\u00a0has awarded\u00a0<strong>1.214 billion euros<\/strong>\u00a0to seven projects under the\u00a0<strong>Renewable Hydrogen Valleys <\/strong>programme. These projects are located in different autonomous communities such as\u00a0<strong>Andalusia, Castilla y Le\u00f3n, Arag\u00f3n, Catalonia and Galicia<\/strong>. A total of <strong>11 electrolysis plants<\/strong> are planned, with a total capacity of <strong>4 gigawatts (GW).<\/strong>\u00a0This commitment is expected to generate investments of <strong>5 billion euros<\/strong> and create around<strong> 20,000 direct and indirect jobs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span data-teams=\"true\">The Government of Spain seeks to promote the development of hydrogen valleys to position our country as a reference in hydrogen within the European Union<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Green Hydrogen Valley in Andalusia<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Led by Moeve (formerly Cepsa), this ambitious project involves an investment of <strong>4 billion euros<\/strong> to achieve an <strong>electrolysis<\/strong> capacity of 2GW and build <strong>Europe\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>largest green ammonia and methanol plants in C\u00e1diz and Huelva<\/strong>.\u00a0The plants will have a combined electrolysis capacity of 2GW and\u00a0 produce up to 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. This project will boost the production of 2G biofuels (produced from organic waste) and by-products such as green\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/green-ammonia\/\">ammonia<\/a>\u00a0and methanol, which will contribute to the decarbonisation of industry and heavy transport.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Green Hydrogen Valley in Arag\u00f3n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In Arag\u00f3n, two initiatives have been selected\u00a0<strong>to receive up to 384 million euros<\/strong>. These are the Catalina project in Andorra and HyBERUS in Caspe. These projects will generate a total of 860 MWe of power and will also have a social impact, creating hundreds of jobs during construction and operation.<\/p>\n<p>Catalina is a project of <strong>Enag\u00e1s Renovable, Naturgy, Fertiberia and Vestas<\/strong> with the <strong>Danish investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP)<\/strong>.\u00a0It involves the construction of a production plant with a 500 megawatt electrolyser to produce hydrogen from water. The first phase, scheduled for <strong>2027<\/strong>, <strong>will produce 84,000 tonnes <\/strong>of hydrogen <strong>per year,<\/strong> <strong>rising to 336,000 tonnes from 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span data-teams=\"true\">The Catalina project will involve the construction of a production plant scheduled to come into operation in 2027, with an annual production of 84,000 tonnes<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Hydrogen Valley in A Coru\u00f1a<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Galician initiative selected is the so-called\u00a0<strong>Hydrogen Valley in A Coru\u00f1a<\/strong>, in which Armonia Green Galicia is participating through its subsidiary Ignis. This project will receive a grant of almost 130 million euros for <strong>the construction of<\/strong><strong> two plants<\/strong>, one for the production of\u00a0<strong>green ammonia<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>outer harbour of Punta Langosteira<\/strong>\u00a0and the other for the production of\u00a0<strong>green hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in A Grela.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Repsol project will receive 40.8 million euros<\/strong>\u00a0to produce green hydrogen through\u00a0<strong>electrolysis<\/strong>, a process that uses electricity to separate hydrogen and oxygen molecules from water. It is currently in the engineering design phase. Once developed, Repsol will use an electrolyser and renewable electricity to obtain this green chemical element, which will be used <strong>to decarbonise its industrial processes in Galicia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hydrogen Valley in Castilla y Le\u00f3n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>green hydrogen valley<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>La Robla<\/strong>, the one in\u00a0<strong>Villadangos del P\u00e1ramo<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>sustainable fuel production plant in Cubillos del Sil<\/strong> have been chosen to receive support from the Spanish government. This investment is an important milestone for the industrial future of Le\u00f3n and the development of a\u00a0<strong>decarbonised economy<\/strong>. These projects are also a driving force for the creation of quality jobs, attracting investment and consolidating the industrial fabric of Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hydrogen Valley in Catalonia<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In Catalonia, two green hydrogen production projects in the Tarragona municipalities of\u00a0<strong>Asc\u00f3 and La Pobla de Mafumet<\/strong>\u00a0will receive government support. A total of\u00a0<strong>236 million euros<\/strong>\u00a0has been earmarked for the plants, which will require a total investment of\u00a0<strong>617 million euros<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Asc\u00f3 project, called\u00a0<strong>HyBERUS<\/strong>, is being promoted jointly with the Aragonese municipalities of Caspe and Fabara. It will have a total electrolysis capacity of 360 MWe. The Mafumet project, called\u00a0<strong>Tarragona Hydrogen Network (T-HYNET),<\/strong>\u00a0is a project led by Repsol, Enag\u00e1s Renovable and Messer to develop the largest electrolyser in Spain, with a capacity of 150 MW, located at the Repsol Industrial Complex in Tarragona.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to produce 2.7 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per hour to supply local industry, reduce emissions and accelerate the energy transition. In December 2023, it received funding from the European Commission\u2019s Innovation Fund, consolidating it as a key project for decarbonisation. As such, T-HYNET is integrated into the Hydrogen Valley of Catalonia and the Ebro Hydrogen Corridor, connecting to the European Hydrogen Backbone, the future European hydrogen transmission network, positioning Spain as a key player in the renewable hydrogen economy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span data-teams=\"true\">The hydrogen valleys of Andalusia, Arag\u00f3n, Castilla y Le\u00f3n, Catalonia and Galicia, among those chosen by the Government to develop its investments<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Challenges and prospects<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While progress has been significant, challenges remain. The need to\u00a0<strong>balance domestic supply and demand<\/strong>\u00a0for green hydrogen is crucial to ensure the economic viability of projects. It is also essential to ensure that <strong>green hydrogen production is cost-competitive<\/strong> with fossil alternatives, which requires <strong>supportive policies and continued technological development.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arguably, hydrogen valleys in Spain will experience remarkable progress in 2025, with significant investments and projects underway that promise to transform the energy landscape. However, to maximise its impact on the energy transition, it is essential to address existing challenges and foster close <strong>collaboration between governments, industry and the scientific community.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Spanish Government recently announced the investment of more than 1.2 billion euros to promote the development of hydrogen valleys in our country.
