It began with an institutional opening by the\u00a0<strong>President of the Spanish Government<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, who reaffirmed the country\u2019s commitment to renewable hydrogen as a core part of its energy strategy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teresa Ribera<\/strong>, Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition at the European Commission, joined from Brussels, and the event was closed by\u00a0<strong>Cani Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong>, President of the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC).<\/p>\n<p>Here, we look at how this edition marked a new milestone in the transition to a sustainable energy system.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Spain commits to green hydrogen: investment, leadership and energy sovereignty<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At the opening ceremony, Pedro S\u00e1nchez reaffirmed\u00a0<strong>Spain\u2019s commitment to<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>the energy transition<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>and the development of\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/green-hydrogen-questions\/\">green hydrogen<\/a>, consolidating the country as a global benchmark in clean energy. \u201cWe are fully committed to green,\u201d said S\u00e1nchez, highlighting Spain&#8217;s strategic role in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the Government pointed out that green hydrogen is \u201can alternative that is growing exponentially because of the immense possibilities it offers\u201d. He also stressed that\u00a0<strong>Spain has attracted investment in recent years<\/strong>\u00a0to make it a world leader in this energy source.<\/p>\n<p>According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Spain is home to\u00a0<strong>20% of the green hydrogen projects<\/strong>\u00a0announced in the world, despite representing only 1.3% of global GDP. The country also ranks second in the Hydrogen Investability Index, reflecting private sector confidence in its potential.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Pedro S\u00e1nchez: \u201cRenewable energies are our passport to energy sovereignty, and hydrogen is a key vector for achieving this\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt is estimated that by 2030 we will produce 20% of all green hydrogen in the European Union,\u201d said S\u00e1nchez, highlighting the impact this technology will have on the decarbonisation of the continent. In this sense, three of the seven projects selected in the first auction of the European Hydrogen Bank are Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0<strong>Spain plans to export 2 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year<\/strong>, strengthening the European Union\u2019s energy security and reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels<\/p>\n<p>For his part, the Chairman of Enag\u00e1s,\u00a0<strong>Antonio Llard\u00e9n<\/strong>, highlighted\u00a0<strong>the role of green hydrogen in Europe\u2019s energy security<\/strong>. He recalled that recent international events have highlighted the urgency of achieving energy independence.<\/p>\n<p>Llard\u00e9n also emphasised that\u00a0<strong>cooperation between administrations, industry and businesses<\/strong>\u00a0will be crucial to linking production centres with demand centres, thus stimulating the development of the sector.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Enag\u00e1s makes progress in the spread of green hydrogen in Europe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Enag\u00e1s continues to lead the energy transition with the development of key green hydrogen infrastructures. In his presentation,\u00a0<strong>Arturo Gonzalo<\/strong>, CEO of the company, confirmed that the\u00a0<strong>European Projects of Common Interest (PCI) are progressing as planned<\/strong>\u00a0in the execution schedule and that four new sections of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone have been submitted to the second PCI call.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to\u00a0<strong>the\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enagas.es\/en\/energy-transition\/hydrogen-network\/h2med\/\">H2med<\/a><strong> corridor,<\/strong> Gonzalo reiterated its strategic importance as it will allow the Iberian Peninsula to link its renewable hydrogen production potential with the main industrial centres in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalo pointed out that <strong>H2med consolidates its position as the most advanced pan-European hydrogen corridor in Europe<\/strong>, following the\u00a0Call For Interest launched by Spain, Portugal, France and Germany The market response has been overwhelming, with 528 projects presented by 168 companies from all over Europe, reinforcing the demand for green hydrogen and positioning Spain as a\u00a0strategic hub in the sector.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>H2med consolidates its position as the most advanced European hydrogen corridor in Europe after the\u00a0Call For Interest carried out by the operators from Spain, Portugal, France and Germany<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Commenting on H2med, <strong>Teresa Ribera<\/strong>, the European Commission\u2019s Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition,\u00a0stressed in a video message from Brussels that this corridor will play an essential role in\u00a0<strong>the creation of a European hydrogen ecosystem<\/strong>, promoting efficient connections between producers and consumers across the continent.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>An unprecedented plan for public participation in Spain<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>During the event, Arturo Gonzalo presented some of the projects underway at Enag\u00e1s. The company is driving the development of\u00a0<strong>the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone<\/strong>, a key infrastructure for decarbonisation and energy security. In 2025 and 2026, the company will carry out the largest Public Participation Plan (CPPP) in its history, in collaboration with the Spanish Government, autonomous communities and local entities. This project covers a route of approximately 2,600 km and involves more than 1,000 stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>The main objectives of the Public Participation Plan are to facilitate the administrative process towards the final investment decision in November 2027 and to ensure a transparent dialogue with the territories and stakeholders.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>New sections of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The CEO of Enag\u00e1s also announced that, as part of its commitment to green hydrogen, the company has submitted\u00a0<strong>four new sections<\/strong>\u00a0to the second PCI call:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guitiriz \u2014 Zamora<\/li>\n<li>Huelva \u2014 Algeciras<\/li>\n<li>Zamora &#8211; Navarra (northern plateau transversal hydrogen pipeline)<\/li>\n<li>Puertollano \u2014 Madrid \u2014 East (Levante) (southern plateau transversal hydrogen pipeline)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These proposals are based on the results of the\u00a0Call For Interest\u00a0presented at the 2nd Enag\u00e1s Hydrogen Day in 2023.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Europe accelerates its commitment to green hydrogen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In his speech, the CEO of Enag\u00e1s underlined how much of a priority green hydrogen is becoming for Europe and its strategic <strong>autonomy project<\/strong>. \u201cA year ago in this very same place we were talking about the progress that would be made in the next twelve months, and a year later we can see that this progress has been made,\u201d he explained. And 2024, according to Gonzalo, marked \u201ca before and after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Key milestones include the publication of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enagas.es\/en\/press-room\/news-room\/press-releases\/h2med-spanish-hydrogen-backbone-definitive-pci\/\">final list<\/a> of European Projects of Common Interest in April, which included H2med and the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone; the announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enagas.es\/en\/press-room\/news-room\/news\/european-funds-forums-eldiario\/\">the results of the first auction<\/a> of the European Hydrogen Bank &#8211; with a second auction to be held in December with 50% more funds &#8211; and the approval of the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Directive and Regulation in June.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Enag\u00e1s CEO, 17 EU countries have included electrolysis targets in their energy and climate plans, with a total capacity of 53 GW. In addition, <strong>48 projects with a total pipeline length of 21,000 km<\/strong> have already been approved, with an estimated investment of 60 billion euros. \u201cGreen hydrogen is the perfect meeting point between the competitiveness agenda and the green agenda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Experts discussed the future of decarbonisation at the 3rd Hydrogen Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The 3rd Hydrogen Day featured a number of discussion panels and keynote speeches. Arturo Gonzalo moderated the round table \u201cBuilding a European hydrogen network together\u201d, with <strong>Pascal De Buck<\/strong>, CEO of\u00a0<strong>Fluxys<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Stefano Venier<\/strong>, CEO of\u00a0<strong>Snam<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Rodrigo Costa<\/strong>, Chairman and CEO of\u00a0<strong>REN<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Dominique Mockly<\/strong>, Chairman and CEO of\u00a0<strong>Ter\u00e9ga<\/strong>; and\u00a0<strong>Maria Rita Galli<\/strong>, CEO of\u00a0<strong>DESFA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas H\u00fcwener<\/strong>, CEO of\u00a0<strong>Open Grid Europe<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Pierre Duvieusart<\/strong>, Deputy CEO of\u00a0<strong>GRTgaz<\/strong>, then gave the technical presentation on H2med, highlighting the results of the first\u00a0Call For Interest\u00a0for a pan-European hydrogen corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the Chairman of\u00a0<strong>the Spanish Hydrogen Association<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Javier Brey<\/strong>, moderated the debate on \u201cDecarbonisation of industry with green hydrogen and other molecules.\u201d Participants in this debate included <strong>Maarten Wetselaar,<\/strong> CEO of<strong> Moeve<\/strong>; <strong>Carles Navarro<\/strong>, General Manager of<strong> BASF<\/strong> in Spain; <strong>Nadja H\u00e5kansson,<\/strong> CEO of <strong>Thyssenkrupp Uhde<\/strong>; <strong>Andreas Lippert,<\/strong> Vice Chairman and General Manager of Electrolysers at <strong>Accelera by Cummins<\/strong>; and <strong>Joan Batalla<\/strong>, President of <strong>Sedigas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by a round table discussion on the challenges facing Europe in decarbonisation and the role of green hydrogen, with the participation of the CEO of <strong>Hydrogen Europe, Jorgo Chatzimarkakis<\/strong>; the Deputy Head of the <strong>CINEA<\/strong> Innovation Fund Unit <strong>of the European Commission, Mar\u00eda Alfayate<\/strong>; the International Relations Officer of the <strong>European Commission\u2019s<\/strong> Directorate-General for Energy, <strong>Carlos \u00c1lvarez<\/strong>, and the Director of the European Network of Hydrogen Network Operators (<strong>ENNOH<\/strong>), <strong>Abel Enr\u00edquez<\/strong>. The debate was moderated by <strong>Luis Parada<\/strong>, Director of EU Energy Policy &amp; Regulation at Enag\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<p>The role of innovation in the development of hydrogen also featured prominently.\u00a0<strong>Susana de Pablo<\/strong>, General Manager of Engineering, Technology and Digitalisation at Enag\u00e1s, gave a presentation on the importance of technology and innovation, highlighting the work of the Hydrogen Technology Observatory.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Enag\u00e1s\u2019 Third Hydrogen Day brought together several European experts to discuss and map out the energy future<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This was followed by a discussion on the role of hydrogen in German imports from the 2030s onwards, with the participation of <strong>Gunther Grathwohl, Head of Division at the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action<\/strong>; <strong>Barbara Fischer<\/strong>, General Manager of <strong>FNB Gas;<\/strong> <strong>Matthias Obert<\/strong>, Executive Director of Trading at <strong>EnBW<\/strong>; <strong>Matthias Deutsch<\/strong>, Hydrogen Programme Lead at <strong>Agora Industry;<\/strong> and <strong>Timm Kehler<\/strong>, Chairman and CEO of the <strong>German Gas and Hydrogen Association for Industry<\/strong>. <strong>Nora Vogt<\/strong>, Deputy Head of Division at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, moderated the panel discussion.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, the event continued with a speech by\u00a0<strong>Ra\u00fal Yunta<\/strong>, Chairman of the Iberian Gas Market (<strong>Mibgas<\/strong>), who presented the Iberian Hydrogen Price Index. Later,\u00a0<strong>Claudio Escarpenter<\/strong>, energy and natural resources partner of\u00a0<strong>Bip Group<\/strong>, presented the report on the potential of renewable hydrogen in the Iberian Corridor, prepared for the European Commission. Along the same lines,\u00a0<strong>Natalia Latorre<\/strong>, General Manager of Energy Transition at Enag\u00e1s, and\u00a0<strong>Jes\u00fas Gil<\/strong>, Director of Hydrogen at Enag\u00e1s, discussed the importance of public participation in the deployment of the hydrogen backbone.<\/p>\n<p>The closing of the event was marked by a debate on hydrogen as a key vector for <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/hydrogen-mobility-sustainable\/\">sustainable mobility<\/a>.
