{"id":7929,"date":"2025-01-22T15:07:04","date_gmt":"2025-01-22T14:07:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/uncategorized\/frio-ecologico\/"},"modified":"2025-01-23T12:57:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T11:57:12","slug":"sustainable-cold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/proactive\/sustainable-cold\/","title":{"rendered":"Green and sustainable cold: a solution to improve energy efficiency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an increasingly sustainable world, the\u00a0<strong>use of resources<\/strong>\u00a0that were previously considered\u00a0<strong>waste<\/strong>\u00a0has become a fundamental pillar of energy innovation.<\/p>\n<p>One example of this growing trend can be found in projects that turn the residual cold from the\u00a0<strong>liquefied natural gas (LNG)<\/strong>\u00a0regasification process into a valuable asset, creating\u00a0<strong>sustainable cold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Harnessing resources previously considered waste has become a key pillar of energy innovation<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>During the regasification process, <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/what-is-lng-and-why-is-it-the-only-real-alternative-for-maritime-transport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>liquid natural gas<\/strong><\/a> is at very low temperatures, around -160\u00b0C, generating a residual cold that in many cases is lost without being used.<\/p>\n<p>However, Enag\u00e1s, through its spin-off E4efficiency, has reversed this situation by exploiting this cold, promoting the so-called\u00a0<strong>sustainable cold<\/strong>. Owing to this, it optimises the resources of its regasification terminals in Huelva and Barcelona, while at the same time\u00a0<strong>promoting the\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/committed\/the-circular-economy-and-renewable-gas-are-necessary-for-the-recovery-of-the-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>circular economy<\/strong><\/a><strong>, reducing its carbon footprint and increasing energy efficiency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With this initiative, the company is taking a step further towards integrating clean technologies and reducing the environmental impact, demonstrating that even in the most complex industrial processes it is possible to find ways to maximise the use of resources and contribute to a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sustainable cold in Huelva<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first application of <strong>sustainable cold<\/strong> by Enag\u00e1s, with a small prototype, the \u201c<strong>Shaky Project<\/strong>\u201d, was launched more than five years ago at the LNG terminal in the Port of Huelva.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cShaky Project\u201d is part of Enag\u00e1s&#8217; energy efficiency and sustainability strategy and <strong>uses the excess cold generated by LNG<\/strong> to create an innovative freezing system that <strong>allows<\/strong> <strong>the production of ice and the deep freezing of food<\/strong>, reaching temperatures below -40\u00baC. This project has also demonstrated the technical feasibility of distributing this cryogenic energy to businesses in the port area via a network of \u201cindustrial cold lines\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The \u201cShaky Project\u201d uses the excess cold generated by LNG to create an innovative freezing system<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In this way, by scaling up the prototype, a project is currently being developed for the use of<strong> sustainable cold<\/strong> in the Huelva terminal, with a 3MW cold box and a 4km long distribution network of \u201ccold lines\u201d, which will make it possible to supply several cold logistics warehouses in the Port of Huelva, which will have a very competitive and sustainable energy supply at a very competitive and sustainable cost.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, some of this <strong>LNG energy will be used for CO2 liquefaction and storage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sustainable cold in Barcelona<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At the Enag\u00e1s LNG terminal in the Port of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enagas.es\/en\/communication-office\/current\/press-releases\/agreement-barcelona-cold-veolia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barcelona<\/a>, a 15 MW residual cold recovery facility has recently been commissioned, generating 131 GWh per year of sustainable, low-carbon and competitive local energy and avoiding the emission of more than 32,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.<\/p>\n<p>The residual cold resulting from the regasification process is recovered and injected at -20\u00baC into the largest urban refrigeration network in southern Europe, 4.5 km long, directly benefiting several important infrastructures in the area, such as the Fira de Barcelona, the offices of the Regional Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya), industrial centres and buildings for tertiary use (offices, hotels, shopping centres) and public facilities, as well as residential customers and, in the future, Mercabarna, following an agreement signed with Veolia.<\/p>\n<p>This project is the result of a close collaboration launched in 2009 between Veolia, Enag\u00e1s, Barcelona City Council and local stakeholders in Barcelona and L&#8217;Hospitalet de Llobregat to exploit the benefits of <strong>sustainable cold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Local energy produced from residual cold will increase the competitiveness of local infrastructures, while accompanying the urban and sustainable transformation of the Barcelona port area and its surroundings.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Local energy produced from residual cold improves the competitiveness of local infrastructures<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAll these initiatives demonstrate that <strong>sustainable cold<\/strong> is a key solution to ensure local supply and to face the global challenges of energy sovereignty and <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/lng-bunkering-for-the-decarbonisation-of-the-seas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decarbonisation<\/a>\u201d, says Javier Ruesga, technologist at E4efficiency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an increasingly sustainable world, the\u00a0use of resources\u00a0that were previously considered\u00a0waste\u00a0has become a fundamental pillar of energy innovation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":7924,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[78,79,72],"class_list":["post-7929","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-proactive","tag-decarbonization","tag-innovation","tag-sustainability"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Green and sustainable cold: a solution to improve energy efficiency - Good New Energy<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Discover how the sustainable cold generated during the LNG regasification process contributes to energy efficiency.
