It is also about overcoming dependence on fossil fuels, integrating clean technologies and changing people\u2019s mobility habits.<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, <strong>transport<\/strong> is one of the most <strong>energy-intensive<\/strong> and polluting sectors, not only in our country but in Europe as a whole. In fact, it is responsible for a quarter of the continent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/carbon-capture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/a> emissions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Transport accounts for a quarter of Europe\u2019s CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions include specific measures for this sector through a firm commitment to sustainable mobility. Mobility requires a wide range of technological solutions to meet the targets set at national and European level.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>European Green Deal<\/strong> aims to reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions from transport by 90% by 2050. This is a step towards making Europe a climate-neutral economy and also towards the goal of zero pollution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Renewable molecules<\/strong>, and <strong>hydrogen<\/strong> in particular, will be <strong>essential<\/strong>. This is underlined by REPowerEU, which envisages that 25% of renewable hydrogen consumption in Europe will be for transport by 2030.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">By 2030, 25% of Europe&#8217;s renewable hydrogen consumption shall be for transport<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A solution for decarbonising land, sea and air transport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/potential-green-hydrogen-decarbonization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hydrogen<\/strong><\/a> will play a key role in decarbonising land, sea and air transport.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Renewable hydrogen use by mode of transport<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><u>On land<\/u> and for large car fleets, renewable hydrogen is already <strong>a real alternative<\/strong>. It will play a more important role in heavy transport, where electrification is difficult (due to battery size and recharging time).<\/p>\n<p>In its Hydrogen Roadmap for 2030, Spain has set targets in this area:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>100-150 hydro-power plants by 2030<\/li>\n<li>150-200 hydrogen buses<\/li>\n<li>and between 5,000-7,500 vehicles for freight transport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This <strong>renewable gas<\/strong> will therefore be the answer to meeting the target of 1% of non-biological renewable fuels in the automotive sector by 2030, as set out in the REDIII Directive. Based on 2023 data, this 1% corresponds to 98,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p><u>In the maritime sector<\/u>, <strong>renewable hydrogen<\/strong> could decarbonise 80% of today\u2019s international shipping, according to the report <em>A Pathway to Decarbonise the Shipping Sector by 2050<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Other targets have also been set that will contribute to its gradual decarbonisation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At European level, the FuelEU Maritime Regulation requires a <strong>2% reduction <\/strong>in emissions intensity by 2025, rising to 80% by 2050.<\/li>\n<li>From <strong>2030<\/strong>, <strong>1.2% of fuels<\/strong> must come from <strong>renewable fuels<\/strong> of non-biological origin, mainly hydrogen and its derivatives, as set out in the REDIII directive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>And in the aviation sector<\/u>, according to the latest <em>Bloomberg Energy Outlook<\/em>, <strong>aviation<\/strong> will be <strong>the world&#8217;s largest hydrogen-consuming mobility sector<\/strong> by 2050, accounting for around 25% of global demand. The European regulation <em>ReFuelEU Aviation<\/em> commits this segment to using 2% sustainable fuels in aviation by 2025, rising to 70% by 2050. This will make it possible to achieve the target of an 80% reduction in emissions intensity.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>LNG, a reality for decarbonising transport<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/what-is-lng-and-why-is-it-the-only-real-alternative-for-maritime-transport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>LNG<\/strong><\/a> is currently a solution for the decarbonisation of heavy transport, especially maritime and road transport, where electrification is not possible. This is also the case for trains, in this case thanks to bio-LNG.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">LNG is a solution for the decarbonisation of heavy transport, especially maritime and road transport, where electrification is not possible<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Its use makes it <strong>possible to <\/strong>eliminate SOx <strong>emissions<\/strong>, reduce NOx emissions by 90% and reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions by 20-30% compared to traditional marine fuels. In<strong> Spain<\/strong> alone, it will allow a <strong>reduction in emissions<\/strong> equivalent to replacing more than one million internal combustion vehicles with electric ones, and <strong>improve air quality<\/strong> by reducing up to 2 Mt of CO<sub>2<\/sub> by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Our country is a <strong>leader in the decarbonisation of<\/strong> <strong>maritime<\/strong> <strong>transport<\/strong>, having quadrupled the supply of <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/lng-hydrogen-cruise-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LNG<\/a> to ships in the last two years, avoiding the emission of 74,000t CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A prepared infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For hydrogen to become a real alternative for mobility, <strong>the infrastructures<\/strong> that link the supply (where it is produced) with the points of consumption, in this case the means of transport that need it, <strong>will be key<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Spain will be part of the first European hydrogen corridor, named H2med, together with Portugal, France and Germany<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Spain is already working on this. Our country will have the <strong>Spanish Hydrogen Backbone<\/strong>, promoted by Enag\u00e1s as the provisional hydrogen transmission network operator (HTNO), and will be part of the <strong>first European hydrogen corridor<\/strong>, named <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/hydrogen-corridor-spain-european-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H2med<\/a>, together with <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/green-hydrogen-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portugal<\/a>, France and Germany. Both projects will be crucial for the development of a competitive hydrogen market and for Spain and Europe to become leaders in sustainable mobility.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transport is one of the most energy-intensive and polluting sectors, not only in our country but in Europe as a whole.
