{"id":7073,"date":"2024-05-03T10:00:54","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T08:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/?p=7073"},"modified":"2024-09-25T14:06:40","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T12:06:40","slug":"white-hydrogen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/white-hydrogen\/","title":{"rendered":"White hydrogen: characteristics of this energy vector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrogen is classified by colour and the one known as white or natural, golden, or geological hydrogen, is a gas generated within the Earth&#8217;s crust.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In contrast to green, yellow, pink, or blue hydrogen, which are produced through various transformation processes, white hydrogen forms naturally as a result of diverse chemical and geological phenomena. <\/span><b>Water filtration between tectonic plates and the decomposition of certain iron-rich underground sediments are two processes that naturally produce white hydrogen.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its capacity to form without the need for industrial manufacturing, along with the inherent characteristic of hydrogen to not emit CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when used as an energy vector, renders <\/span><b>white hydrogen a completely emission-free gas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, one of its key attributes is the consistent generation of white hydrogen at locations that fulfil the requisite conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><b>further research is needed to address various technical issues associated with this type of hydrogen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These issues are primarily concerned with obtaining more accurate estimates of the amounts present in the subsoil, determining the feasibility of extraction across the different contexts where it occurs, and assessing the technical and economic efficiency of integrating it into the energy market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is there white hydrogen in Spain?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1960s, the <\/span><b>National Oil Company of Aragon (Empresa Nacional de Petr\u00f3leos de Arag\u00f3n) was exploring for crude oil in the Monz\u00f3n area, Huesca, but instead discovered indications of white hydrogen at a depth of more than three kilometres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At that time, the discovery was deemed merely an interesting find\u2014since hydrogen typically occurs combined with other elements\u2014and operations at the site were concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Pyrenees mountain range is estimated to have the potential to yield an additional five to ten million tons of white hydrogen<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over five decades later, in 2022, a public-private partnership re initiated exploration efforts at the site, where they detected high concentration levels of natural hydrogen. Should the field become operational, <\/span><b>it is estimated that approximately 1.1 million tonnes of white hydrogen could be extracted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, <\/span><b>projections suggest the presence of additional similar formations throughout the Pyrenees mountain range<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which could yield an extra five to ten million tons of hydrogen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What white hydrogen projects are there around the world?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, <\/span><b>the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates up to five trillion tons of natural hydrogen within the depths of our planet.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although a significant portion of these reserves might be inaccessible, tapping into even several of these sources could satisfy the projected demand for hundreds of years. If achieved, this would represent a monumental advance in combating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/potential-green-hydrogen-decarbonization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">descarbonisation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Currently, there is just one white hydrogen field being exploited in the world.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a well in Mali, situated in the locality of Bourak\u00e9bougou. This well was accidentally discovered in the late 1980s during subsurface drilling for water.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Moreover, various research projects are ongoing in countries including<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/france-trusting-development-hydrogen-energy-source\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Albania, and the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The French government, for example, has approved a mining exploration project for hydrogen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helium, and related substances in the Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Atlantiques region, named &#8220;Sauve Terre H2&#8221;. This initiative will enable the analysis of an area of approximately 225 km\u00b2 within that region.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Currently, there is only one active white hydrogen field globally: a well in Mali<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, <\/span><b>in France, in the Lorraine region, a significant deposit of natural hydrogen was inadvertently discovered<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a team from the Georesources Laboratory at the University of Lorraine (CNRS) while they were assessing methane levels in the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CNRS estimates that this deposit may contain about 46 million tons of natural hydrogen,\u00a0 an amount exceeding half of the global annual production of grey hydrogen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, in the Bulqiz\u00eb chromite mine, located in an Albanian municipality, a potential for producing over 200 tons of white hydrogen annually has been identified.<\/span> <b>In Nebraska (USA) , the country&#8217;s first white hydrogen well has already been drilled<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, in places like Australia, the government has issued numerous licenses for the exploitation of this type of hydrogen.
