{"id":6859,"date":"2024-02-05T14:19:47","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T13:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/uncategorized\/innovadores-hidrogeno-verde-brasil\/"},"modified":"2024-09-23T14:12:27","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T12:12:27","slug":"brasil-green-hydrogen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/brasil-green-hydrogen\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil: keys to support its green hydrogen plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The journey to sustainability that <\/span><b>Brazil, one of the world\u2019s leading producers of clean energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has embarked on could be accelerated with the help of so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/journey-through-the-hydrogen-value-chain-from-production-to-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green or renewable hydrogen.<\/a> Along the way, it aims to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen its economic leadership in the region, as the country with the highest gross domestic product (GDP) in Latin America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Brazil meets the conditions to become a major player in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the global <\/span><b>green hydrogen economy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to a strong industry and a well-established energy infrastructure, it has vast resources. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Brazil\u2019s renewable hydrogen potential?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on data from different industry players in Brazil, including the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), the country<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the potential to bring its production costs below the global average<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazil\u2019s National Secretariat for Energy Transition and Planning estimates the <\/span><b>hydrogen production potential at 1.8 gigatonnes per year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These expectations are mainly driven by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Natural resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Brazil has a rich availability of energy resources, ranging from high solar radiation in many of its regions to enormous biomass potential. Renewable energies account for 85% of the current share of production, with hydroelectric power taking the lead (64% of energy production). Let us recall that <\/span><b>in order to be considered green or renewable, hydrogen must be produced using clean energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Experience in biofuels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The country has a long history in the production and export of biofuels, especially ethanol derived from sugar cane (of which it is the world\u2019s leading producer and exporter). <\/span><b>Experience, know-how and some of the existing infrastructure provide a solid basis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the production and distribution of renewable hydrogen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>A powerful industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With a diverse economy and a strong industrial fabric, Brazil can count on economic resources and skilled labour for the hydrogen economy. The <\/span><b>automotive sector, for example, can play a key role in the development of hydrogen-powered vehicles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially for public transport and freight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Export capability.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> By exploiting these three advantages, Brazil has earned a leading position in export which it can use to export renewable hydrogen internationally. <\/span><b>It has a strong port infrastructure and a diversity of global trading partners.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Brazil\u2019s hydrogen production potential is estimated at 1.8 gigatonnes per year<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>What is Brazil doing about green hydrogen?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazil has activated different initiatives to boost investment in renewable hydrogen. <\/span><b>In 2023, it launched the Renewable Hydrogen Pact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the support of regional governments, private associations &#8211; mainly in the field of renewable energy &#8211; and international organisations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pact, which will be active until 2025, seeks to <\/span><b>strengthen the production of clean hydrogen through 65 specific actions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/south-korea-its-hydrogen-route-sheet-idi-based-hydrogen-route-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including investment in research, development and innovation (R&amp;D&amp;I).<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another milestone to boost the green hydrogen economy in Brazil is the Ministry of Mines and Energy&#8217;s 2050 National Energy Plan, which <\/span><b>describes this energy vector as a disruptive technology and a strategic element for the decarbonisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An additional initiative worth highlighting is the National Hydrogen Plan. It has an allocation of around 40 million euros to disseminate pilot plants throughout the country. This plan hopes to help <\/span><b>Brazil become a competitive producer by 2030 and consolidate several hydrogen hubs by 2035<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The European Commission will invest 2 billion euros in Brazil to develop green hydrogen projects<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazil\u2019s potential has sparked interest in other parts of the world. During an official visit, the president of the European Commission, <\/span><b>Ursula von der Leyen, announced the investment of 2 billion euros in the country to develop green hydrogen projects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The EU wants to import 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/energy-transition-biodiversity-natural-balance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to meet its energy transition targets<\/a>, and is relying on building a transatlantic market with partners such as Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country could lead the renewable hydrogen industry in Latin America.
