Due to the wide range of waste products, the approach to tackling this issue is complex, so it is crucial to examine it from a variety of angles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, there are methods to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/how-can-waste-be-turned-into-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the negative impact of waste<\/a> on the environment and, in fact, important steps are being taken to mitigate this impact. Examples include the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), the promotion of sustainable materials, the circular economy, and energy recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The energy sector, which is acutely aware of this issue, has also taken measures. And biogas is one of the great hopes for reversing the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Waste recovery\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waste also presents an opportunity, since it represents a valuable resource. Biogas is the predominant form of waste recovery, and is obtained mostly from agricultural waste (agriculture and livestock), agri-food industry waste, and municipal solid waste (MSW) or wastewater (WWTP sludge).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/biogas-the-key-renewable-gas-in-moving-towards-a-circular-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biogas<\/a> is produced when microorganisms degrade organic matter by anaerobic digestion (without oxygen), resulting in a gas containing methane and carbon dioxide as its main components. Biogas can be used to produce electrical and\/or thermal energy. The removal of CO2 after a purification process, known as upgrading, also produces <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/biomethane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biomethane<\/a>, which can be fed into the existing natural gas grid or used as fuel for vehicles, and its conversion is used to generate electrical and thermal energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utilising waste for energy through biogas production has a positive impact on several fronts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reduces the demand for new resources, such as natural gas, which have to be extracted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The method reduces the impacts caused by the extraction of resources for energy generation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery offers a renewable energy resource that has minimal environmental impact.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This biogas can then be used to generate electricity, thermal energy or as fuel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Waste-to-energy utilization by means of biogas production has a positive effect in several areas<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agricultural biogas (produced from manure and slurry, crop waste, etc.) also produces a high quality fertiliser. In other words, in addition to the energy generated, which can be used for self-consumption or injection into the grid, the processed substrates (digestate) are ideal for agriculture, as they are nutrient-rich.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5001\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-6-1-300x188.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"924\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-6-1-300x188.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-6-1-1024x640.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-6-1-768x480.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-6-1.jpeg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 924px) 100vw, 924px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Biogas in Europe<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biogas is a highly valued energy resource in the European Union. With ambitious climate targets and growing concerns about dependence on Russian gas, the European Commission aims to meet 30-50% of Europe&#8217;s gas demand with biomethane in 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Green Pact includes biogas and biomethane among the technologies to be developed because they contribute to decarbonisation, the development of the circular economy and the integration of energy systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>European Green Pact includes biogas and biomethane among technologies to be developed<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe produces half of the world&#8217;s biogas and biomethane, with almost 20,000 plants. The main European players are Germany and Denmark, which have extensive experience with large-scale production and injection of biogas into the natural gas grid, in contrast to other countries where use is more local.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Europe sees biogas not only as a mechanism for achieving its sustainability goals, but also as an opportunity for the development of the agricultural and livestock sectors. One of the key institutions of the European Union is the Common Agricultural Policy, which prioritises environmental conditions and good land conditions so as to reduce emissions, improve production, and ensure the economic viability of the sector. Therefore, promoting biogas plants can play a key role in reducing methane emissions and enhancing local cooperation to maximise the value of agricultural operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Biogas in Spain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain has more than one hundred biogas plants, mainly in landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and agro-industrial operations, in that order, although there are also plants in industries (paper, chemical, food, etc).\u00a0 The country has also put in place five facilities connected to the gas grid that have the capability to produce biomethane from biogas, such as Valdeming\u00f3mez in Madrid, which was developed through a public initiative, or UNUE in Burgos, developed through a private initiative.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite not being exploited to its full potential yet in Spain, future prospects for biogas look promising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government believes that it can fully harness all this potential and, in this spirit, last March, the Council of Ministers approved the <\/span><b>Biogas Roadmap for Spain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which outlines 45 measures to increase production almost fourfold by 2030. These measures address five strategic areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulatory instruments to highlight the renewable origin of biogas, remove administrative barriers and promote circular economy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sector-specific instruments to promote the use of biogas and biomethane.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic instruments to provide fiscal and economic support for the development of the sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cross-cutting tools to diversify economic activities, promote specific training and bring biogas closer to the public.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote R&amp;D&amp;I as a mechanism for technological maturity, economic viability, deployment in different sectors and reduction of emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To address the problem of waste, we must start by avoiding it as much as possible. However, as the generation of waste is unavoidable, we need to focus on reducing its environmental impact while reaping the benefits it can bring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biogas is one of our most important allies: It provides local and storable renewable energy, reduces energy dependency, raw material extraction and pollution, and promotes circular economy.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Europe generates a large amount of waste from multiple sources, which is a major environmental problem.
