This branch of biology, which is applied in various sectors such as medicine or food, seeks to apply technological fundamentals to living organisms and biological systems so that products and processes can be created or modified.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accordingly, it is possible, for example, to increase the resistance of some plants to certain pests, improve the production yield of some crops, make the treatment of liquid waste more efficient or create\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in vitro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0tissues to treat injuries, among many other applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the field of energy, biotechnology can help replace traditional fuels by using biomass as an energy source. Biomass uses organic matter such as crops, agricultural waste or cellulose, among others, to obtain heat and electricity through different processes, for example, combustion or the use of gases generated by their decomposition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, biotechnology makes it possible to generate fuels with a neutral balance of emissions. But production on a large enough scale to cover all needs, allowing the energy transition to become real, remains a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Biotechnology makes it possible to generate emission-neutral fuels<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the processes of obtaining fuels through biotechnology also encounter some prejudices in social, economic and environmental terms that make this vision controversial. And they highlight the need for transformation to be sustainable in the broadest sense of the word: socially just, economically viable and environmentally responsible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The five main benefits of using biotechnology to create fuels<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of biotechnology to create fuels that provide a sustainable energy alternative has five major benefits:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1)\u00a0<\/span><b>Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and elimination of toxic emissions with respect to traditional fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2)\u00a0<\/span><b>Reduced dependence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0on traditional fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) Viable income alternative for the primary sector and potential\u00a0<\/span><b>driver of rural development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4)\u00a0<\/span><b>Reduction of contaminants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in soil and water (with the ensuing benefit to human and ecosystem health).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5) Possibilities of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/sustainable\/how-can-waste-be-turned-into-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>energy recovery of waste<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and waste reduction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4715\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-11-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"917\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-11-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-11-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-11-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ENAGAS-BIOCOMBUSTIBLES-11.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 917px) 100vw, 917px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biotechnology applied to the energy sector requires crops that must be managed ethically to avoid negative consequences at local level, with global repercussions. Thus, one of the most important ways to avoid these undesirable effects is the promotion of a new generation of cellulose-derived fuels. These biofuels will make it possible to meet this challenge in a more sustainable way and, at the same time, diversify the energy supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>We need to create specialised labour and promote investment projects in partnership with public administrations and private institutions<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considered as second generation biofuels, their interest lies in obtaining ethanol from cellulose, i.e. from products with no food uses (firewood, wood chips, sawdust, etc.), plants grown on marginal lands (of low fertility or low value) or products that require less care (avoiding the need to use environmentally harmful fertilisers).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This context demonstrates the importance of innovation in driving the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/la-digitalizacion-el-impulso-necesario-para-completar-la-transicion-energetica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy transition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
