{"id":4638,"date":"2022-03-08T08:55:29","date_gmt":"2022-03-08T07:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/uncategorized\/mujeres-y-sector-energetico-mas-cerca-de-la-igualdad\/"},"modified":"2024-09-25T13:48:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T11:48:28","slug":"women-and-energy-sector-closer-to-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/committed\/women-and-energy-sector-closer-to-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"Women and the energy sector; closer to equality?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March 8th has become an international day to make women\u2019s participation in society more visible and to highlight effective equality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back, a great deal of progress has been made towards the real integration of women, but we must also be aware of how much remains to be done. <\/span><b>Inequality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0still persists today. Even if we are fortunate enough not to perceive it in our day-to-day lives, it remains a major problem in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Female presence in the energy sector<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<\/span><b>energy sector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0does not escape the general trend. Although huge progress has been made in recent years, it is still an area with a low female presence. According to AEMENER (Spanish Association of Energy Women), less than 30% of the workforce in this sector in Spain is female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In senior and middle management positions, the presence of women is much lower than that of men. Only 22.5% of women hold senior management positions. This, in addition to being a reality that urgently needs to be changed, is meaningless if we evaluate capabilities, education levels and the total population of women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is essential to understand the reasons why the presence of women is not more widespread in the sector in order to be able to provide solutions. On the one hand, it may be due to traditional gender roles and on the other hand, due to the so-called \u201cglass ceiling\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender biases and stereotypes are an obstacle to the presence of women in the energy sector. Traditional cultural and social norms still influence the labour market and education, which means that the presence of women remains limited in the sector and, in general, in all subjects related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo have more women in this sector, it is essential that initiatives continue to be promoted to give women greater visibility,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/committed\/equality-transition-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosa Nieto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Director of Asset Management at Enag\u00e1s, in this blog. \u201cSometimes it can be difficult to find female role models, not because they do not exist, but because of the lack of visibility. This is key to making technical careers attractive to girls and young women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>It\u00b4s essential that initiatives continue to be promoted to give women greater visibility<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of women in the business world, and in turn in the energy sector, is also influenced by the so-called\u00a0<\/span><b>\u201cglass ceiling\u201d, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that invisible barrier that prevents women from advancing to managerial positions. For\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/committed\/the-reduction-of-the-environmental-footprint-of-our-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Rita Galli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, appointed CEO of DESFA a year ago, \u201c the real piece of news will be, when a woman CEO in an Energy company will no longer be news.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4640\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8M_blogGNE_ENG-1-1-300x130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"927\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perceptions of gender roles have a lot to do with it, but there are other factors that create these obstacles such as unequal pay, women\u2019s involvement in family care, work-life balance, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how is this situation being addressed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Solutions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To\u00a0<\/span><b>increase the presence of women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at least to values comparable to their relevance in society as a whole, it is important to provide a gender perspective to the energy sector (as to any other sector in which women are underrepresented).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contribution of women in this field must be highlighted. A sector that is set to be of great importance in the coming years, with a paradigm shift &#8211; the energy transition &#8211; that will require the talent of everyone, women and men, working in multidisciplinary teams towards a common goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are facing a change of model in many aspects of society and the economy. The transition to a decarbonised economy is one of the clearest examples. There are many challenges and targets and I am convinced, as my colleague Rosa pointed out in the previous interview, that the female perspective is going to be key to achieving a more sustainable future,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/committed\/interview-with-susana-de-pablo-enagas-dispatching-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susana de Pablo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dispatching Director at Enag\u00e1s, in an interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Commission is clear on this issue and in 2021 launched its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energy.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/energy-strategy\/equality-platform-energy-sector_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEquality platform for the energy sector\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0where it states that it is important for the energy sector to actively promote equal opportunities at all levels, from energy professionals and decision-makers to consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will therefore be necessary to act accordingly by establishing\u00a0<\/span><b>reconciliation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> policies, promoting\u00a0<\/span><b>family support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0measures and reinforcing\u00a0<\/span><b>diversity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also by eliminating the <\/span><b>pay gap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promoting job <\/span><b>flexibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating targeted <\/span><b>career plans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promotin <\/span><b>mentoring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programmes, facilitating <\/span><b>networking <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and increasing <\/span><b>training <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, it is important for society and the educational sphere <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/committed\/interviewmariaretuertomillan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to support girls\u2019 capabilities in STEM skills\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mar\u00eda Retuerto, researcher at CSIC, and recently interviewed in this blog, considers that \u201cgirls should be encouraged and educated from a young age to study whatever they want without any conditions determined by their gender.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>It\u00b4s important for the educational sphere to support girls\u2019 capabilities in STEM skills<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many initiatives promoted by sector companies to support the presence of women at all levels of the organisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Enag\u00e1s, for example, the presence of women is 29% and the goal is to continue to increase this percentage.\u00a0\u201cWe are committed to measures aimed at increasing the participation of women in positions of responsibility, as well as training, coaching and networking\u00a0initiatives to promote female talent,\u201d says Teresa Blanco, the company\u2019s Diversity Manager. Some examples are the Women with Talent development programme, the Promociona project and the Progresa project, the latter in collaboration with the CEOE, which aims to provide high-potential women with the necessary tools and skills to boost their professional careers and take on high-level positions of responsibility in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe great challenge is not only to promote the presence of women at management level, but also at middle management and operator level, where the presence is lower,\u201d she points out.\u00a0To this end, the company is promoting initiatives such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SzWiHmiXRr8&amp;t=1s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#EllasTeLoCuentan (#TheyTellYou)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which aims to showcase the personal and professional development of some of its female employees by highlighting their technical profile in the company.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 8th has become an international day to make visible the participation of women in society and highlight effective equality.
