{"id":4177,"date":"2021-12-03T11:04:49","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T10:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/?p=4177"},"modified":"2024-09-25T13:48:22","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T11:48:22","slug":"uk-charts-its-own-green-industrial-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/uk-charts-its-own-green-industrial-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"UK charts its own \u201cgreen industrial revolution\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is that by 2050 between 20% and 35% of energy consumption should be based on hydrogen as a new energy carrier.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK\u2019s path to climate neutrality is now set. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its government\u2019s strategy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce polluting gases as much as possible is clear and has hydrogen as its main protagonist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its roadmap proposes a green industrial revolution in the short term. To such an extent that it aspires to position the country as an international leader in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/what-is-the-hydrogen-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the promotion of hydrogen technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To this end, it aims to achieve 5GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data provided by the UK Government estimates that a competitive hydrogen economy could be worth \u00a3900 million, while creating some 10,000 quality jobs by 2030. If consolidated, the evolution could be exponential and there is talk that by 2050 it could employ 100,000 people and be worth up to \u00a313 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>The UK government estimates that a competitive hydrogen economy could create around 10,000 quality jobs by 2030<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Green and blue hydrogen generation\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK\u2019s approach includes the generation and storage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/from-grey-to-green-colours-of-hydrogen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green hydrogen and blue hydrogen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its roadmap emphasises the need to reduce the costs of both to encourage their deployment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The production of these two types of energy is based on different processes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of green hydrogen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is 100% clean gas,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it uses electricity from renewable sources to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen in the water. Blue, on the other hand, involves the production of hydrogen from fossil fuels with the addition of CO\u2082 capture and storage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK Government has explicitly mentioned blue hydrogen as a key part of its strategy and advocates making the necessary investment in technology to produce it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the final use of hydrogen is the use of its energy for heat production, it is possible to combine it with natural gas (blending) in the gas network for joint transport and use at the point of consumption. The UK strategy proposes to blend 20% hydrogen into the existing gas supply, a measure that would result in a 7% emissions reduction in supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/london-g07f9b3ba4_1920-1024x575.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Targets set and innovative projects\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The line drawn by the authorities aims to have between 20% and 35% of the UK\u2019s energy consumption based on hydrogen by 2050. Accordingly, this energy source would be an essential pillar in the goal set by this <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/?lang=en&amp;s=countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nation<\/a> to reach net-zero- emissions in that year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Hydrogen would be central to the UK&#8217;s goal of zero net emissions by 2050<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is clear that the path has to be gradual and therefore it has set some intermediate targets, such as reducing emissions by around 68% in 2030 and 78% in 2035.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also has several innovative projects underway:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Natural gas transformation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Acorn Hydrogen project uses oil and gas infrastructure in Scotland to produce low-carbon hydrogen from North Sea natural gas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Decarbonising cement manufacture:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Welsh firm Hanson Cement is conducting trials in its production process that demonstrate how using hydrogen from renewable energy can help decarbonise cement manufacture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Replacing an industrial gas boiler with hydrogen:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unilever and Progressive Energy are working to replace a natural gas boiler with hydrogen at Port Sunlight (England).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hydrogen-fuelled buses:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrightbus in Northern Ireland has opted for<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hydrogen fuel cell buses, the research and development of which is publicly funded.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the first steps the UK is taking to lay the foundations on which to develop a hydrogen economy.
