Money without physical representation (no coins or banknotes).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a decentralised currency, which is not regulated by an authority or controlling entity responsible for its issuance and the registration of its movements, such as the government of a country. A new way of buying and selling, in which there are no banknotes or coins, but instead electronic transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the world of cryptocurrencies requires some effort; basically, we must handle four concepts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bitcoins <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(with a capital B): describes the concept of bitcoin, the network and the communication protocol they maintain for economic \/ monetary transactions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>bitcoin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(with a lowercase b): is the unit of the cryptocurrency.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mining (of cryptocurrencies)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: is the process of solving the complex mathematical problems needed to validate transactions and issue new coins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>(Cryptocurrency) miner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: can be the person who performs cryptocurrency <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mining<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also the specific mining machines needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin has burst onto the financial sector with a bang. And being a novelty in such a sensitive sector, it has generated mixed feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the detractors, those who criticise the high energy cost required to store information on huge \u201cserver farms\u201d, and the execution of thousands of transactions per second.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recently published by Cambridge University, claims that bitcoin consumes 143 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity. The equivalent of the annual energy consumption of small countries like Malaysia or Sweden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to these data, if bitcoin were a country, it would be the 27th most energy-hungry nation on the planet. But energy consumption is neither good nor bad, in and of itself, from a climate impact perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>If bitcoin were a country, it would be the 27th most energy-hungry nation on the planet<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clear distinction must be drawn between the amount of energy a system consumes and the amount of carbon it emits. Many organisations are trying to define the composition of different energy sources used by<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin mining computers in order to calculate the associated carbon emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a basis for these analyses, the Commission for the Control of Financial Activities (CCAF), has created the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cbeci.org\/mining_map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin mining map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This map plots the geolocation of servers and places where operations are performed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3706\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bitcoin3-1-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"924\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bitcoin3-1-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bitcoin3-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bitcoin3-1-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bitcoin3-1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 924px) 100vw, 924px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 2019,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coinshares.com\/research\/bitcoin-mining-network-december-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a report claimed that 73% of bitcoin\u2019s energy consumption was carbon neutral<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, largely due to the abundance of hydroelectric power in major <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mining<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hubs (centres where bitcoin<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">operations take place), such as southwest China and Scandinavia. But the CCAF estimated in September 2020 that the figure is closer to 39%. The data, therefore, vary too much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>A clear distinction must be drawn between the amount of energy a system consumes and the amount of carbon it emits<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proponents of bitcoin remind us that this virtual currency does not need to use energy that is generated near its end users, so it allows miners (operators) to use other sources of energy. As it is generated far from population hubs, or in physical spaces that make it difficult to move, the energy consumed could not be used in any other way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conclusion, we can know how much energy a bitcoin consumes, but it is more difficult to determine the impact it has on the environment. A 2018 study, recently cited in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claimed that bitcoin could warm the earth by two degrees Celsius<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in less than three decades<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The level of energy consumption of Bitcoin<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activity, and the impact this consumption has on the planet, deserves attention. If the use of bitcoin becomes widespread, the demand for energy will increase. The increase in energy demand must be well managed.
