{"id":2087,"date":"2020-10-23T14:09:07","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T12:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/uncategorized\/espana-dispuesta-a-crear-un-proyecto-de-pais-alrededor-del-hidrogeno-verde\/"},"modified":"2024-09-23T14:46:53","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T12:46:53","slug":"spain-ready-to-create-a-national-project-around-green-hydrogen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/spain-ready-to-create-a-national-project-around-green-hydrogen\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain, ready to create a national project around green hydrogen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The Government approves the Hydrogen Roadmap and underlines green hydrogen as a key element in achieving climate neutrality and a 100% renewable electricity system<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>With an investment of 8,900 million euros, it has set objectives for 2030 that include, among others, producing 4 GW of installed electrolysis capacity and ensuring that 25% of industrial hydrogen consumed is of renewable origin\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge of the Spanish Government gave the green light to the \u201cHydrogen Roadmap: a commitment to renewable hydrogen\u201d, which underlines green hydrogen as a key element in achieving climate neutrality and a 100% renewable electricity system by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain thus joins other countries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/japan-firm-commitment-to-hydrogen-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japan<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/hydrogen-the-backbone-of-chinas-energy-transition-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> China<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/france-trusting-development-hydrogen-energy-source\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">France<\/a>, which have resolved that the road to decarbonisation requires placing green hydrogen as the central axis of their future energy strategy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the deployment of green hydrogen, the authorities aim to promote the development of innovative industrial value chains, generate employment and economic activity and contribute to the revival towards a green economy with high added value.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Green hydrogen as an energy vector<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrogen is not a primary energy source (like the sun or wind), but an energy vector. That is, a manufactured product capable of storing energy that can later be released. When renewable energies are used in the manufacturing process, the hydrogen obtained is considered \u201cgreen hydrogen\u201d or \u201crenewable hydrogen\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Citizens and entities involved in the hydrogen value chain participated in the preparation of the Hydrogen Roadmap.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renewable hydrogen is positioned as one of<a href=\"https:\/\/goodnewenergy.enagas.es\/en\/innovative\/hydrogen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> the main energy vectors<\/a>, as its production and consumption is climate neutral and does not generate polluting emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also has a variety of uses, including land, maritime, air and rail mobility, industry and electricity generation.<strong> It is one of the important players in the energy transition, as it makes the decarbonisation of all sectors possible, and allows energy to be stored on a seasonal basis.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Objectives set<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miteco.gob.es\/es\/ministerio\/hoja-de-ruta-del-hidrogeno-renovable.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Roadmap<\/a> sets out national objectives for promoting renewable hydrogen by 2030 and, based on these, designs a vision for 2050, the year by which Spain should have achieved climate neutrality and have a 100% renewable energy system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objectives, in line with the targets set by the European Commission in its Hydrogen Strategy, are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Production of 4 GW of installed electrolysis capacity<\/strong> &#8211; the system for producing renewable hydrogen using clean energy and water &#8211; which represents 10% of the objective set by the European Commission for the whole of the EU.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>25% of industrial hydrogen consumption will be of renewable origin by 2030.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of mobility by 2030, a fleet of at least<strong> 150 buses; 5,000 light and heavy vehicles; and two commercial train lin<\/strong>es powered by renewable hydrogen have been proposed. Similarly, a network with at least 100 hydrogen generators and hydrogen-powered handling machinery must be installed at the first five ports and airports.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the document proposes 60 measures, grouped into four areas of activity: r<strong>egulatory; sectoral; transversal<\/strong> (to raise awareness of renewable hydrogen\u2019s potential in society as a whole) <strong>and promotion of related R&amp;D&amp;I.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>An opportunity for Spain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this sense, <strong>the Roadmap identifies the opportunities that promoting national production and using renewable hydrogen represent for Spain.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Spain joins other countries that consider that the path to decarbonisation requires placing green hydrogen as the central axis of their energy strategy for the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This document underlines how the development of renewable hydrogen in Spain will bring<strong> environmental, business, economic and social benefits<\/strong>, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminating emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases into the environment in sectors or processes that are difficult to decarbonise to achieve the objectives of a climate-neutral economy by 2050.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing the value chains of the hydrogen economy and positioning Spain as a benchmark in technology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing the penetration of a greater percentage of renewable energies in the electricity system, promoting a greater manageability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing national and European energy dependence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making Spain one of the European powers of renewable energy generation, due to the advantageous climatic conditions and large free surfaces for the installation of renewable energy production plants, both solar and wind.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encouraging the decarbonisation of isolated energy systems, especially on island territories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting Spanish energy R&amp;D&amp;I as a pillar of sustainable economic growth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Key projects<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To draw up the Hydrogen Roadmap, <strong>the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge carried out a public consultation with the aim of gathering feedback from citizens and institutions potentially involved in the hydrogen value chain, which included Enag\u00e1s.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company, which is committed to producing green hydrogen, given it is 100% renewable, is heavily involved in specific projects. It also has infrastructures that are technically prepared to transport and store hydrogen and other renewable gases such as biogas\/biomethane.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it is one of the eleven European gas infrastructure companies driving the European Hydrogen Backbone plan for the development of a specific hydrogen transmission
